BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH SPORT

Competition. Community. Legacy.

For nearly fifty years, the West End Slo-pitch Association has demonstrated that sport can do more than bring people together—it can build community, foster belonging, develop leaders, promote healthy living, and create lasting positive impact.

Founded in 1978, WESA was created to provide a safe, welcoming place for Vancouver’s Pride community to participate in amateur slo-pitch softball. Today, that same purpose continues to guide us. Through inclusive recreation, volunteer leadership, community partnerships, and charitable fundraising, WESA uses sport as a vehicle to strengthen the Pride community both on and off the field.


Our Community Impact

Every WESA program is designed to advance one or more of four goals that strengthen our community.

1. Creating Belonging Through Recreation

WESA provides opportunities for people of all backgrounds, identities, ages, and skill levels to participate in organized recreation within a welcoming and inclusive environment.

Through initiatives such as WESA Athletics, the Coach Squad, the Skills Assessment program, and our three-division playing structure, we work to remove barriers to participation while ensuring members can learn, compete, and belong throughout their softball journey.

2. Building Leaders and Volunteers

Community organizations are sustained by volunteers.

Every season, WESA members contribute thousands of hours as coaches, commissioners, scorekeepers, tournament organizers, mentors, and Volunteers in Pride (ViPs). These opportunities allow members to develop leadership skills while helping create meaningful experiences for hundreds of others.

Our goal is not simply to operate a softball league, but to cultivate the next generation of community leaders.

3. Giving Back to Our Community

Since 1987, the WESA Pageant has served as the League’s signature community fundraiser.

What began as a celebration of creativity and community has grown into one of WESA’s defining traditions, raising more than $171,000 in support of charities and organizations serving Vancouver’s Pride community.

Together with our members, sponsors, and community partners, WESA continues to demonstrate that recreation and philanthropy can go hand in hand.

4. Preserving Community for Future Generations

Building community also means protecting it.

WESA invests in governance, volunteer development, inclusion initiatives, and historical preservation to ensure the League remains strong for future generations.

Programs such as the Player Inclusion Policy, the Hall of Fame, coach education, and long-term planning reflect our commitment not only to today’s members, but also to those who will call WESA home in the decades ahead.

More Than Softball

WESA is proud to be a recreational sports organization, but our purpose extends beyond the game itself.

Every clinic, volunteer opportunity, fundraiser, partnership, and season contributes to something larger: a healthier, more connected, and more resilient Pride community.
