WESA SCOREKEEPING TRAINING
Scorekeeping is an essential part of WESA and Scorekeeper knowledge is an essential part of WESA Membership. This course is for those members learning the basics, including Rookies learning as part of the Softball Essentials program, and for Coach Squad members earning their Scorekeeping milestone.
All WESA Members should know how to keep score of a game. Indeed, understanding the Scorekeeping process is an essential part of gaining a solid understanding of how the game operates.
What does a Scorekeeper do?
A Scorekeeper makes a record of what happens during a game. Each time a player comes up to bat, a record is kept as to what happened for them and every other person in the batting line up. Not only does this allow for tracking of Runs but it also allows for Statistics.
Team Managers should always be prepared to keep track of their own score and that of the opposing team because there will always be games where there is no Official Scorekeeper. Scorekeeping is also an essential part of WESA Team Management training.
Why do we have Official Scorekeepers?
Having volunteers to take on the task of scorekeeping helps by:
- Freeing up of the Coaching Team to focus on enjoying their games without the added administration of taking score and statistical notes.
- Our Official Scorekeepers provide essential information that would normally be performed by Team Managers.
- Volunteering helps build community.
- Scorekeeping deepens a member's knowledge and understanding of the game.
HOW SCOREKEEPING TRAINING WORKS
A few simple steps will put you on the path to joining the ranks of league Official Scorekeepers:
- Review the WESA Official Scorekeeping Manual and refer back to it often
- Contact the League Commissioner to schedule some in person training with a league Official Scorekeeper at a WESA game.
- Celebrate being a part of a long-standing WESA tradition and deepening your understanding of the game
- Enjoy the perks of being a WESA ViP
